It’s not the heat, it’s the humidity!

May 4th, 2010

You’ve heard it many times – it’s not the heat, it’s the humidity! Well in case you never really thought about it what this means is when we experience summer discomfort, humidity plays a big role.

Most of us have experienced the desert Southwest or heard from friends or relatives who have. It is common for someone to say that it was “in the 90’s” but perfectly comfortable “because its a dry heat”.

Well its true – high humidity does make us feel warmer. Why? Because our bodies use our skin to regulate our body temperature. When we perspire the moisture evaporates from our skin, cooling us off. But when the air already has a lot of moisture evaporated in it (high relative humidity0 – our natural cooling system does not work effectively – thus we feel “hot”.

So what can we do to use this information? My next post will talk about the importance of controlling humidity for comfort when installing an air conditioning system.

Air Conditioning tune ups save money

April 13th, 2010

Central air conditioners need annual maintenance to provide reliable comfort. Here are the advantages of having your air conditioner professionally maintained:
1. Use less energy. Professional maintenance includes using an environmentally safe chemical to clean the outdoor and indoor coils to retore their ability to transfer heat efficiently. This saves you money.
2. Fewer repairs. It’s a fact. When air conditioners get annual, professional maintenance, they experience fewer repairs. That saves you money.
3. Longer life. Equipment that is not overworked due to lack of maintenance lasts longer. A new air conditioner is a major expense. Longer equipment life saves you money.
4. More comfort. When and air conditioning system is compromised by lack of maintenance, it can’t deliver the comfort is it designed to give.

Call Apple Heating & Cooling to arrange for your professional tune up on your air conditioning system. Call now before the summer rush.

Air Conditioning

April 1st, 2010

If your current air conditioner is 10 years old or older, here are some things to think about:
There is a tax credit of 30% of the installed cost up to $1500 for qualifying systems installed by December 31 of this year. If you want to get a new high efficiency unit with a new warranty, and get a tax credit, now is the time – the tax credit expires at the end of this year.
If you are considering replacement this year call us now. We are having our off season sale during our traditional slower period – the prices will never get better.

Spring weather is around the corner

March 27th, 2010

Well we were lucky enough to enjoy a couple of sunny days with temperatures in the 70’s last week. Even with the return of some light snow we know April and with it warmer weather is just around the corner. Now is a great time to begin thinking about air conditioning systems and preparing them for another summer’s heat. Call Apple Heating & Cooling and schedule your Precision Tune Up on your air conditioner before the rush.

Electric rate robbery

March 8th, 2010

This winter has been a shocker for those of us who heat with electricity purchased from First Energy. Electric rates have gone up in many cases 100% or more. In my own case my December bill went from $225 to $499 even though I used less electricity.
What has happened is our utility – First Energy – has discontinued our discounted rate that they gave us as all-electric consumers. When they first offered it to me in 1989 they told me it was a good deal for them because I was using power off-peak. Because of the availability of the discounted rates I ended up investing in an electric service upgrade and converted my home to electric heating. Now I am faced with steeply higher costs for heating and my home value has gone down.
There are over 100,000 homeowners that have lost their discount. Luckily many of them are making their voices heard – resulting in Ohio Governor Strickland instructing the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio to force First Energy to restore the discount temporarily while an investigation ensues. And there are class action lawsuits to force First Energy to restore the discounts permanently.
